Blackjack Terms
Bankroll: The amount of money a player starts out with.
Basic Strategy: The moves that maximize the chances of winning according to the mathematical probabilities.
Blackjack: A hand of two dealt cards (an ace and a ten value card) that total to twenty-one.
Bust: Exceed a hand value of twenty-one and lose the game.
Card Counting: Memorizing the played cards to establish whether more high value cards or low value cards are left in play so as to increase the chances of winning.
Double Down: Double the initial wager after seeing the dealt cards with the condition that one and only one additional card will be drawn.
Early Surrender: A form of surrender made before the dealer checks for blackjack.
Face Down Game: A format in which the player's first card is dealt face up and the second one is dealt face down.
Face Up Game: A format in which both the player's cards are dealt face up.
Hard Hand: A hand that has no ace, or an ace that is valued as 1.
Hit: To ask for another card.
Hole Card: The second card dealt to the dealer, which is dealt face down.
Insurance: A side bet that can be placed when the dealer's up card is an ace in order to take protection against the dealer getting a blackjack.
Late Surrender: A form of surrender made after the dealer checks for blackjack, provided the dealer does not have blackjack.
Natural: Another name for blackjack.
Push: When both player and dealer have the same hand value. The bet is withdrawn and nobody wins.
Shoe: A wooden box-like device from which cards are dealt by the dealer.
Soft Hand: A hand that contains an ace that is valued as 11.
Split: A move allowed for the player when dealt two cards of the same value. The player can make an additional identical wager and play the deal as two separate hands.
Stand: Not to ask for another card as the player is satisfied with the hand value.
Surrender: A move made by the player after seeing his dealt cards in which he gives up the deal and forfeits only half his wagered amount.
Up Card: The first card dealt to the dealer, which is face up.
