Video poker is often confused with poker or with slots. It has similarities to both these games but there are also vital differences. Video poker is a fantastic amalgamation of poker and slots. Video poker is like poker because the player has to make the best poker hand and the hierarchy of poker hands decides the payout. However in video poker the player plays against the house and not against other players. There are no betting rounds and no bluffing. Video poker is like slots because it is played on a slots-like machine with cards instead of the usual slots symbols. But in video poker the player does more than pressing the button. The player has the option to replace the cards that he has been dealt. That is where skill comes in.

The player inserts the coin into the machine and presses the play button. The newer machines accept paper tickets as inputs and have finger touch activation. Five cards come on the screen and the player has to decide which he wants to hold. He can keep all or change all or something in between. There is a button below each card that needs to be pressed to hold the cards. In order to avoid confusion the word "hold" is seen above the cards. The objective of the game is to get the highest ranked hand possible and this dictates the choice of cards to put on hold. The player then presses the deal button and the required cards are replaced. Credits are awarded to the player as per the payout schedule. The player makes his next wager and plays the game again. When the player has finished playing he presses the collect button and collects his winnings.
The bets are usually placed as a multiple of the basic denomination of the machine. Typically they are 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x and 5x where 'x' is the basic denomination. Where $1 is the basic denomination the allowable bets would be $1, $2, $3, $4 and $5.
